Personal Responsibility, Public health and a Conflict of Interest

I’ve often discussed in the past how conventional health advice is often over simplified and misleading i.e. “if you want to lose weight you just have to consume less calories and move more”. So where then does responsibility lie for the obesity situation we find ourselves? Should we blame the individual? Have they simply lacked willpower and overeaten? Well, this is a complex question and I believe laying blame with individuals is missing the bigger issue and providing an unnecessary [read more....]

Victoria’s Secret comes under fire, but what is the ‘perfect body’?

Image: Victoria’s Secret. Recently, Victoria’s Secret has received some heat following their latest ‘perfect body’ marketing campaign. A petition has been set up with over 18,000 signatures, requesting an apology from Victoria’s Secret, with the problem being that it sends an “unhealthy and damaging message”. Several questions arise from an issue such as this. Is there a perfect body? Is it achievable? I see (and doubtless other health and fitness colleagues do also) a constant [read more....]

Make time for health now or illness later

There are many issues with this. How [read more....]

Just Eat Real Food…Avoid the Sweeteners!

So we’re heading into the back end of January and everyone has begun their fresh start (and maybe abandoned it already!) People have made their lifestyle change because ‘it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle!’, but what kind of lifestyle?. Many people will be on and off some kind of diet all year round. When you go into the supermarket, do you read labels on food? Do you take notice of the little nutritional traffic light system? Would you avoid a product if the label were red because of [read more....]

Choose your diet wisely

Following the indulgences of Christmas and New year everyone looks to begin their new healthy lifestyle. People will be addressing their diet and exercise regime, and rightly so. While exercise makes an important contribution to achieving good health and look, it does not compensate for bad nutrition.   So people will have choices, as the media is flooded with advertisements for weight loss products. A popular way for people to lose weight is to take up a programme of meal replacement [read more....]
